If you have ever been in a store and looked at different packs of cashews or searched for Zantye's on the internet and thought "which one is the real Zantye's”. You are not the only one.
When a name has been part of Goa's story for nearly a century, it's only natural that others want to be associated with it. But while names may look similar, the legacy behind them is unique.
So here is the story of the Zantye's. How Zantye's started, the journey that made Zantye's a big part of India's cashew industry and how you can always tell that you have found the authentic Zantye's.
Where Our Story Began
Long before cashews became one of Goa's most loved exports to sell they came here for a very different reason.
450 years ago Portuguese missionaries brought the cashew plant from Brazil to Goa. They wanted to stop the soil from wearing out. Over time people from Goa found out how valuable the cashew nut was. What was meant to help the soil turned into one of the state's famous industries.
It was during this time that Shri Ganesh Mahadeo Prabhu Zantye started roasting cashews at home. He sold them in the markets of Mumbai and Karachi. His family business was small. It was built on hard work being honest and a strong belief in quality.
As demand grew, his sons expanded the business, sourcing raw nuts from East Africa and establishing processing factories across Goa. They also set up factories in Bicholim and other parts of Goa. This is how one of India's cashew businesses started. The cashew business kept growing. Goa cashews became popular. Cashew nuts are still loved today.
The Journey That Changed Indian Cashews
In the year 1928 something great happened. People from the Vita Pack Corporation in the United States came to India to find a supplier of high quality cashew kernels.
They had tried this before but it did not work out because the packaging was not good enough for export. They found what they were looking for in Shri Narayan Zantye. With help from the Vita Pack Corporation and the General Food Corporation Zantye's was able to complete the export of Indian cashew kernels to the United States in 1928. This wasn't just a milestone for our family, it was a landmark moment for India's cashew industry. By the 1940s Zantye's was sending out almost 70,000 cases of cashews every year creating jobs in Goa and helping to build an industry that supported many local families. With the problems of the Second World War, changes in trade routes and the growth of Goa's mining industry the business kept growing.
After Goa's liberation, the cashew industry started doing again and so did Zantye's. Today the cashew products from Zantye's reach customers over India and around the world through our own stores, our retail partners and online platforms.
More Than a Business
For us success is not about selling a lot of cashews. It is also about giving back to the communities that have supported us for a long time. The Zantye family has done a lot to help people with healthcare, education and community welfare over the years.
The Hirabhai Narayan Prabhu Zantye Eye Hospital in Aravali, Maharashtra has helped thousands of people see again by doing more than 3,000 eye surgeries for people who grow cashews. We think that education is very important for a future so the Zantye Brothers Educational Foundation started the Narayan Zantye College of Commerce in Sarvan in 1994.
The Zantye family saw that children with special needs in rural Goa needed a school so they gave some land to build the Keshav Seva Sadhana Special School. The Hirabai Narayan Prabhu Zantye Memorial Hall in Bicholim has been a place, for community events, health checks and things that help people stay healthy since 1980. When the pandemic was very bad Zantye's gave an ambulance to the Bicholim Municipal Corporation to help the community. These aren't achievements we share to impress, they simply reflect our values.

Today, Zantye's proudly holds a Geographical Indication (GI) certification. This certification shows that our products are truly from Goa and that we have a connection to the region. We also care about farming in a way that's good for the environment. We started using farming methods a long time ago and we still do things the traditional way when it comes to processing our products.
